Lagunaria patersonii or Norfolk Island hibiscus is a medium to large tree growing 12-20m. It has greyish-green oval shaped foliage which are covered in soft hairs when young. The flowers appear in the leaf axils in spring and early summer. They are generally a pink to mauve but grown from seed the flower colour will not be known until it flowers. The flowers are followed by brown capsules covered in fine hairs which are can be very irritating if they get on the skin.  Grows best in full sun in well drained soils and is hardy and adaptable. Suitable for front line coastal conditions.
